How to create a Wi-Fi QR code

You need the network name, its security type and, for a protected network, its password. Use the details from the network you intend to share. A Wi-Fi QR stores those details; it does not create a network or change your router settings.

1. Create a new QR and choose Wi-Fi. Enter the network name exactly, including spaces and capitalization.
2. Choose the security type. QRDex supports WPA, WEP and networks without a password. Match the actual network settings.
3. Enter the password. Mark the network as hidden only if it is configured that way.
4. Name and save the code. Use a label such as “Studio guest Wi-Fi” so it is easy to recognize.
5. Test with another device. Scan the saved QR and check that the expected network appears and the connection works.

Show it, share it, or give it a widget

Open the saved QR and show it fullscreen when a guest arrives. You can also export an image for a printed welcome card or share the code through another app. Keep enough clear space around the printed code and test the actual print at its intended size.

For daily use, choose the widget action from the QR detail screen. Save its configuration, then place it on the home screen. Follow the iPhone, iPad and Android widget setup guide. Each independent configuration can have its own name and light, dark or system appearance.

Multiple independent widgets are supported on Android and iOS/iPadOS 17+. On iOS/iPadOS 16.4, QRDex keeps the legacy shared configuration.

When your Wi-Fi password changes

Edit the Wi-Fi QR in QRDex and save the new details. Widget configurations linked to that saved QR receive the updated image, subject to the operating system’s refresh timing. Test the updated code before relying on it for guests.

A previously exported image or printed card is a separate copy. It will still contain the old password, so export or print a replacement. QRDex does not redirect scans through an online service and cannot change a copy that is already outside the app.

Choose what you want guests to access

If your router offers a separate guest network, consider using that network’s details for the QR you share. Keep your private network code separate and name both clearly so you choose the right one.

A Wi-Fi QR is a readable way to share connection details, not encryption for the password. Anyone who can see, scan or receive the image may be able to read those details. A home screen widget makes the code visible whenever that screen is visible.

Creating and displaying the QR works locally. The receiving device and network still control whether the connection succeeds; a code does not bypass a captive portal or add support for enterprise Wi-Fi credentials.
